REISSUE: "That Old Black Magic" by Jeanne Shy - Disco Video Mix by Glenn...

One of 1979 gifts to discotheques was Jeanne Shy. Her 12" single "Night Dancer"/"That Old Black Magic" produced by Bob Esty was always a favorite of mine and stood out as a production extraordinaire.

Jeanne's vocals are the most incredible disco performance on "Night Dancer" and on the flip side she transforms the classic standard "That Old Black Magic" into her own disco anthem. This recording always made my heart soar and feet move, of course. Bob Esty's wonderful studio ensemble also creates a memorable feel with both Jeanne's placemat and the swirling strings and funky guitars his productions are known for.

I have taken the 1958 film "Bell Book and Candle" into this Disco Video Mix - the film stars James Stewart, Kim Novak and Jack Lemmon. Not known more for it's efforts to revive the chemistry between Stewart and Novak - for what Alfred Hitchcock did in "Vertigo" - the story centers around a coven of modern day witches and warlock's in the big city. Eventually, our lead temptress and witch, Ms. Novak captures Stewart with a spell and later becomes captured herself by becoming emotionally involved with a mortal.

The film was directed by Richard Quine and is notable only for the starring roles - however, now with a proper soundtrack it can have a deeper and meaningful edge.

Interview with Grammy Award winning Diva Thelma Houston by Dayna Newman

(Dayna)-Thelma, first let me congratulate you on your beautiful new CD that I had the pleasure of receiving in the mail from Chip at Mileshighproductions so I could get a first listen and thank you for giving your time to do this interview as well.

(Dayna-I am going to ask you some questions about the CD later in the interview which I LOVE by the way.

(Thelma Houston)Oh Thank you so much Dayna It makes me so happy to know people enjoy my music.

1-(Dayna)- Thelma your career has spanned several decades and has been very prosperous for you. How does it feel to have such longevity and success and what do you think the secret to your success is? "so to speak"

(Thelma Houston)-I really don't think about it until I see it in Black and white on paper.
Them I'm like Whoa girl You've been busy.
And also loving what I do and never losing my passion for performing and meeting new people helps too.

2- (Dayna)-How did you like working with Motown .
And was it really like the big family they so often  portrayed  in the media?
(Thelma Houston)-I was on MoWest and I was so in awe of being a part of Motown with people like Smokey Robinson etc
I felt like part of the family but I really wasn't a part of it in some ways and the Motown label
continues being like a family to this day.

3-(Dayna)- I know that you are very active in charities that benefit Aids foundations and have been very generous with your time not to mention the large sums of money that your presence at these events raise. Is there any particular reason that AIDS "a very worthy sometimes swept under the carpet issue " is close to your heart ?

(Thelma Houston)-Because I have lost so many friends and supporters to Aids and now the highest risk group for Aids is young black women ,Plus I see all the children living with Aids It's Devastating.

4-(Dayna)- You were recently inducted into the Dance Music Hall of Fame and also honored on Showtime at the Apollo for being an Apollo legend, Not to mention your Grammy ,how do these honors make you feel knowing that there are few and far between that will ever receive them ?

(Thelma Houston)-Of course it always feels good to be recognized for your work, plus it also motivates me .I suppose you could say it's like a cherry on top of my Ice cream Sundae(both of us laugh)

5- (Dayna)Ok Thelma as a disco enthusiast I have to ask about Your Grammy award winning song "Don't Leave Me This Way". Easily one of the most beloved and recognizable dance songs in music history. Does it bother you that you are called a Disco Diva, or do you feel it limits you at all professionally?

(Thelma Houston)The word Diva is used with the highest respect, so no it doesn't bother me at all.
I do all kinds of music, In this business it's better if you are versatile and have a range as far as the kind of music you can perform especially when you open for artists like Sammy Davis Jr, Lou Rawls, Dionne Warwick as well as other artists. I loved working with Sammy Davis Jr, he made sure you were given the same treatment he was given, He was a wonderful man a great entertainer.

6-(Dayna) I have to say that I love "Don't Leave Me This Way" with all my heart but I also love "I'm Here Again" and "Saturday Night Sunday Morning" just as much and after listening to your new CD over and over I see I am going to have a few more Thelma Houston Favorites to add to that list, Do you have a favorite song of yours or one that has special sentimental value?

(Thelma Houston)-Thank you so much Dayna I appreciate that, Saturday Night Sunday Morning is such a happy song and makes you feel good.

(Dayna)-Yes it does girl I Love the energy in that song.

(Thelma Houston)-I would have to say My favorite song Iv'e recorded "although I love them all" would have to be "That's The Way Of The World" My cover of The Earth Wind & Fire Classic from My new Cd "A Woman's Touch"
I could be feeling bad or have a problem and put that song on in my car and drive down the PCS Highway and by the time I get to where I was going my problem would be solved and I would be feeling so much better.
It has so much passion and feeling to it.No ones ever asked me that question before Dayna, Thank you

(Dayna)-My Pleasure Thelma, I have to say that's a wonderful song and I can see how it would make you feel exhilarated.

7- (Dayna)-You have worked with some wonderful writers and producers which did you click with the best and why do you think that was?

(Thelma Houston)-Jimmy Webb without a doubt, He is responsible for my style of music.

8- (Dayna)-I have heard nothing but good things about Jimmy Web, a dear friend of mine "Sephra "Winters" who was in the music industry for years use to talk about Jimmy all the time and how much she loved him plus I have heard countless others speak highly of Him.
How was it working with the great Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis?

(Thelma Houston)-They were great to work with, such talent.

9-(Dayna) -Out of all the musical artists you have worked along side of which ones would you work with again in a heartbeat, whether it be because they are fun to work with or maybe there professionalism?

(Thelma Houston)- Dayna could you please hold on a minute? I'm in the middle of moving and the cable people are here, a girls gotta do what a girls gotta do( laughing)

(Dayna)Thelma ,For you anything~!!and I know that's right.

(Thelma Houston) Ok I'm back.. I would have to say all of the artists like The Village People, Kc & The Sunshine Band, Evelyn Champagne King, Nile Rodgers and Chic and a few others. We could go years without seeing each other and it would be like we just saw each other yesterday.

10-(Dayna)-One of our most popular and knowledgeable members "Markydefad wanted to know what happened to the tracks recorded with Van McCoy
as referenced in a Tom Moulton interview in 1976?

(Thelma Houston)Umm The Van McCoy recordings...They were released on a Motown compilation.
(Dayna) I'm certainly going to look into it and see if I can find them somewhere.

11-(Dayna)-You have performed just about everywhere imaginable where would you say is your favorite venue to perform?

(Thelma Houston)-Wherever there is a great audience..I like performing where I get imediate feedback, I love doing Musicals that way you can act and sing as well I also love doing concerts.

12-(Dayna)-Do you find that a Gay audience is more upbeat than a straight audience or does it depend on the venue ?

(Thema Houston)-Well..I love all my audiences and You find upbeat crowds in both gay and straight clubs although with a gay crowd The audience is more apt to start dancing and getting into the music quicker than most would.

(Dayna)-OK the new CD "a Woman's Touch" Thelma let me tell you I love it, Starting with Wake Up Everybody, such a stylish, soulful rendition of a great song. The songs just flow so gracefully. I absolutely LOVED your reinventing of Sylvester's classic "You Make Me Feel Mighty Real/Dance(Disco Heat)" I expect to see this on the billboard dance charts very soon.. Jody Watley recently had a number one hit with a remake of Chic's "I Want Your Love" and I see the same thing happening to this song. Fabulous!!!!

(Thelma Houston)- Oh Thank you Dayna that's so sweet, I did that particular song especially for the dance market ,I use to go to Jazzersize and the instructor would play that song and the little blue haired ladies would run up after class and ask ,who was that singing that song?(Laughing)and of course it was Sylvester, I loved him.

(Dayna)-Another of my favorites on the Cd is Love and Happiness, the Al Green cover, the groove on this song is one that makes you want to grab a margarita sit under a palm tree and just chill.(Both Giggling) Thelma, There isn't a song on the Cd that I don't like. I know your produced the CD please tell us about it and what inspired you to make it and why you chose the songs you did, "great choices by the way ".

(Thelma Houston)-Myself and one of my gay friends both had crushes on Al Green at one time so maybe that's why I chose that song,(Both giggling )Really ,I just love that song.
I wanted to do a Cd of songs that I love to sing at my live shows and that's what I did.
I refused to change my style and I didn't, I stayed true to myself and I am very pleased at the way it has been received.

(Dayna)-We're very pleased that you didn't change your style as well, It's 100% pure Thelma Houston and that can only be delicious~!!!
Thelma ,Thank you again for allowing me to do this interview, I know everyone at DiscoMusic.Com will be delighted, Oh and before I forget One of our Moderators at the site Johan
aka Videoskooter wanted me to tell you hello and he thinks your beautiful.

(Thelma Houston)-Aw, Thank you Johan and Miss Dayna thank you so much it has been a pleasure.

(Dayna) The pleasure was all mine.I wish you continued success and I will be looking for you on the charts.

Interview with Diva Divine Sharon Brown by Dayna Newman

Sharon Brown

An interview with Sharon Brown who is best remembered for her huge early 1980s dance hit, "I Specialize In Love" on Profile Records.

Sharon Brown The following is an interview with singer and songwriter Sharon Brown kindly conducted and provided by DiscoMusic.com member, Dayna Newman.

(Dayna) Hey Miss Sharon, Thank you for allowing me to pick your brain and interview you. And it's safe to say you are far from a one trick pony. You have accomplished so much in your career with much more to come I'm sure.

First off I must say that I LOVE your new single "Thinking of You" it's fresh hip and it would keep me on the dance floor and I'm not just going to stay on the floor for any ole song~! Where and how can we pick up a copy of "Thinking of You?"

Sharon Brown (Sharon Brown) Well thank you Dayna! My new song "Thinking of You " can be purchased direct from me at my web page, which is: http://www.myspace.com/sharonbrownispecializeinlove. A one trick pony! L.O.L. I have never heard that saying before, that's real funny! A one Hit Wonder is what I have been referred to!

(Dayna) L.O.L... I hate when someone is labeled a one hit wonder or my saying because the "Hit" is so fabulous... People have short attention spans as a general rule and so many artists are listed as one hit wonders who definitely don't belong in that category.

OK next question, I have heard this, but wanted to ask you: Is it true that "I Specialize in Love" is the number one most requested song in dance clubs? I wouldn't doubt it, as it still stands up to any dance song that has ever been put out.

(Sharon Brown) Yes, It was the number one requested song in the clubs and it kept you on the dance floor!

(Dayna) OKAY~!! It sure did and still does. I'm not scared to go up to the DJ booth and ask them to play my Jam.

Back to "I Specialize in Love." That song is legendary and just plain ole fabulous~! How does it feel to have a song that has made such a contribution to the dance industry and will live on forever? Because songs come and go and most are easily forgotten but that will never be the case with "I Specialize in Love."

(Sharon Brown) It feels great! Some times though I say to myself " It would have been the right thing to do if Profile Records " Cory Robbins And Steve Plotnicky along with the biggest crook of all Eddie O'louglin would have paid me!

(Dayna) That's a damn shame, I hear that quite often, especially with the old school girls...

Sharon you have worked with some wonderful producers and artists which one or ones did you really enjoy working with the most?

(Sharon Brown) Norman Whitfield! He has taught me all I know about writing and producing music!

Norman was the only person in my life who said to me "You do not need a producer, You can produce yourself " and I have been doing just that ever since! Along with Curtis Mayfield and Hank Cosby from Motown, these men have all took time to teach me. Curtis taught me to pay close attention to lyrics and Hank taught me the commercial format of songwriting.

Norman gave me free reign in the recording studio and gave me the push and confidence to do what I love to do, he also dropped a hint on my way out of the studio one day that my boyfriend had to go! I did not understand at that moment, but after many years of bull with that boyfriend then I married the clown did I realize what Norman had meant... The man was clearly in the way!

I have lost contact with Norman. I wish somehow we could re-connect; I owe him big time! I would just love to be able to say to him THANK YOU NORMAN! I have gone on to win the "BEST NEW FEMALE ARTIST OF THE YEAR AWARD" for " I Specialize in Love" and Norman said that I could! It would be so wonderful to see him again.

(Dayna) Well maybe he will read this because if anyone wants to know anything about disco or dance music they come to DiscoMusic.com.

You wrote a song for legendary rock group "Blood Sweat & Tears called "Love Looks Good On You." How did that come about and did you enjoy working with them?

(Sharon Brown) Well, Heck Yeah!
BLOOD SWEAT & TEARS, How good was that! My very first big gig ever!

I had been down town New York City looking around with music only on my mind and I happened to pass by the CBS recording studio and I went in the building and the security guard was in the lobby, he questioned me as to what and where was I going! I said to him I have no place to go, but I would love to know who was in the building recording at that moment and he told me that " Blood Sweat & Tears was in the building recording on the second floor. I asked if I could go up and peek in and he took a real long look at me and said OK! You go up and come right back!

I went up and I peeked in the room and there was Hank Cosby sitting at the controls and he saw me and said can I help you? I said Yes! I am Sharon Brown and I am a singer/songwriter! He laughed and stopped the session, signaled the group to come into the room and said meet this cocky woman who says she's a songwriter and a singer!

Well Bobby Colomby the drummer for the group said to me are you a Jew? I replied why do you ask? He said because you are wearing a Star of David! I knew then no person would understand why I wore the Star of David and I was clearly a woman of African blood! All I can say now is if any one person asked me why I wore and wear the Star Of David I would just say to them " RAGGAMUFFIN RULES" L.O.L.

Anyway Hank Cosby and Bobby Colomby put me to the test and sent me home that day with a track and said to me: "bring this track back tomorrow and have a song ready to record!" I DID! "Love Looks Good on You!"

(Dayna) How exciting and wonderful for you and for them as well because they had the benefit of using your talent.

Girl~! I was horrified when I saw Carol Douglas try and make you look shady on the People's Court and I saw it on Television not YouTube. BUT everyone saw that the judge was not buying her mess, I felt embarrassed for her, I respect her as an artist but question her morality and ethics after seeing that and I don't care if she sees this, L.O.L....

How did that make you feel and have you spoken to Carol Douglas since then?

(Sharon Brown) Yes, I have spoken to Carol since the court date! We have recorded a song as the "Diva All-Stars" for Carol Williams called "Don't Leave Me This Way" along with Fonda Rae, Alison Williams, Peggi Blu, and Wanda Dee.

I am a bigger person than Carol tried to portray me to be. I never told the court the real deal about why we ended up in court. I did not really want to air Ms Douglas's dirty mess! She did however piss me off to the point that I would not ever trust her as a person again in life! However Carol Douglas is one of the very best melodic singers I know and would love to write and produce for her. She just can not seem to stay focused enough to get the job done and is always up to no good!

Sharon Brown Carol and I had been produced by Eddie O'Louglin and he did a dirty thing when he dropped Carol from the label and signed me. Only after letting Carol hear the new song "I Specialize In Love" and she thinking the song was for her, when Eddie burst her little bubble and said no, this song is for my new artist "SHARON BROWN" and our deal is over. Have a great life!

After that harsh blow Carol has always wanted to meet me and when she did I thought we would be great friends after all Eddie had robbed us both. NOT! She was so sneaky to the point she caused tons of trouble with and for me along with a host of others and I still love her and wish her the very best. I think PRAYER! Is in order!

(Dayna) "FAINT..." Girl she sounds like an OAK TREE. "full of shade" L.O.L... I feel sorry for people like that. I never knew Carol Douglas thought she would be singing "I Specialize In Love." Like I said before, I respect her as an artist and she can blow, but I can not imagine anyone, but you turning out that song~!!

I recently did interviews with Linda Clifford and Melba Moore and am proud to add you to my list of Legendary Divas, are you friends with either of these lovely talented ladies?

(Sharon Brown) RESPECT! Is what we have for each other, I would not say we are friends, but I will say we do love each other and would love working together.

(Dayna) I have to give it to you old school diva's… you look fabulous, your skin, your hair and you have kept your shape. Time has been very kind to you, what do you do to maintain your look?

(Sharon Brown) STARVE! L.O.L. Exercise and drink plenty of WATER! Ladies, water is the key to health.

(Dayna) I feel that, I drink about a gallon a day sometimes more, I always have a huge insulated cup of water within reach.

What artists do you listen to these days, what's in your DVD player right now?

(Sharon Brown) REGGAE MUSIC! The Marley Family! Mind Control by S. Marley and Ky-Marni Marley also Damian Marley Jr. Gong also " Sizzla", Capelton King Shango, Third World, Rita Marley and the list goes on and on RASTA FARI!

(Dayna) Well as Stevie Wonder said, BOOGIE ON REGGAE WOMAN. L.O.L.

Tell us something about Sharon Brown that people don't know, something fun, silly, anything. We love all the info we can get on our favorite divas.

(Sharon Brown) People don't know that I am really a funny girl! I have such a sense of humor that sometimes I think I have missed my real calling! I am also Master Certified in Microsoft Office 2000
And I swear I can dance! I can not! But you can't tell me different.
I Specialize In Love

(Dayna) Oh I know you're a funny girl with a great sense of humor . On the phone you had me laughing and carryin on~!!

You have given us some great insight into your world and I wish you more and more success you are a lovely lady inside and out... Rumor Has It - Glenn Rivera ReStructure Mix - Donna Summer

Donna Summer again is spotlighted in this ReStructure Mix and from "Once Upon A Time" comes the "Rumor Has It" - "Muh-muh-mah" blend.

Don't ask me what that means - this just popped into my head and had to do it.

Thanks to Lady Gaga for the "Muh-muh-mah"!

REISSUE: "Disco Inferno" by The Trammps -- Disco Video Mix by Glenn Rivera

In 1976 The Trammps topped their soulful success with a disco hit titled, "Disco Inferno - Produced by Earl Young, Norman Harris and Ronald Baker, this LP was the break into ultimate dance floor continuity for these guys.

The song was featured in the 1977 soundtrack "Saturday Night Fever" and the rest we all know about. This cut has been the most celebrated track in disco music and even today it a stamp for the non-stop sound of the disco mix. This one aided again by the talented and incredible Tom Moulton.

Being a teenager in the 70's left me exposed to the disaster film genre starting with films such as, "Earthquake" and "The Poseidon Adventure" -- it was an exciting time and lots of adventure. I have taken some scenes from Mr. Irwin Allen's (The Master Of Disaster) and segued them into this dance classic by The Trammps. In no way do I heckle or laugh at "fire" -- this is intended as a fun and harmless excursion. I in no way want to project that pain and suffering is amusing. I hope you will understand and enjoy my "hot" little project!

Note: "Disco Inferno" was supposedly influenced by this film.

Yvonne Elliman's singing career began in 1969 in London where she performed at various bars and clubs. This led to a recording contract and later, in Miami, a close association as a backing vocalist for Eric Clapton. She performed on many of his 1970s hits including "I Shot the Sheriff" and "Lay Down Sally". She sang the role of Mary Magdalene in the original album of Jesus Christ Superstar and in the subsequent Broadway and film version, and achieved her first hit single with the ballad "I Don't Know How to Love Him." This performance led to a 1974 Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy.

Her recording career began to take off from this point and she scored several hit singles throughout the world, including cover versions of the Barbara Lewis hit "Hello Stranger" and the Bee Gees' "Love Me." Her biggest success came in 1977 with her #1 hit from the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, "If I Can't Have You" which was also written by the Bee Gees. The song was a big hit, rising to #1 in the Billboard Hot 100. Its success has resulted in Elliman being remembered as a disco artist, though this style of music was an exception to the medium-tempo ballads that she specialized in.

She appeared in a two-part episode of the television action series Hawaii Five-O during this period as an aspiring singer, performing the song "I Can't Get You Out of my Mind" with co-star James Darren. The single "Savannah" was also a hit and demonstrated Elliman's attempts to move away from disco music and create music that focused more on her vocal abilities.

After a considerable hiatus, Elliman reappeared on the music scene. An album titled Simple Needs, with all songs written by Elliman, was released globally on June 12, 2007. She has continued performing in music festivals, benefits and concerts throughout the country and around the world while calling Hawaii home again for the past nine years. She lives a peaceful life taking care of her elderly parents and cooking for her long-time boy friend, Allen Alexander, when she is not on the road.

I have always been able to appreciate the beauty of Yvonne Elliman's voice and music, as well as her obvious physical beauty. She can linger on a note, and sustain a purity of tone, that gets warmer, the longer she goes. She is raw and edgy in true 'rocker chick' style on songs like 'Can't Find My Way Back Home.' Check out the Youtube video of her singing this song. It's also available on her CD "20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of Yvonne Elliman." She recently played in Los Angeles where I had a chance to finally meet up with, and work with, one of my long-time musical heroes. There was an instant connection. Hawaii's New First Lady of Song is an out-going, fun, warm, and beautiful soul with so much musical talent. As it happens Eric Venturo is a major fan of Miss Elliman as well, so we had a lot of fun getting these shots and talking to her before she went on stage at the Hollywood Bowl.

AM: Do you perform a lot in Hawaii?

YE: They don't pay very well. All the musicians who live there have to have day jobs. I don't know why that is because you would think that the tourists would bring a lot of money into Hawaii.

AM: Would you ever take a day job?

YE: If the truth be known I do not want a regular job.

AM: Would you ever go back to Broadway?

YE: I don't want to repeat myself. That is why I was only on Broadway for six months. The producers knew I was too young to be doing eight shows a week. It can get to you. I wanted to change the blocking! (laughing)

AM: Is it true that you took a flat fee instead of a percentage for the original Jesus Christ Superstar album?

YE: Yes I took $240.00. They spread it out on the desk like a deck of cards. I thought, 'Damn!' My manager and I were hungry. She told me, 'Darling, it's not very good. Take the money.' (laughing) We took the money and ran. We bought a case of Matusse wine and a bunch of steak. Then we had a party on top of the roof. It was the best time.

AM: What do you remember about recording 'I Don't Know How To Love Him' and "Everything's Alright' for that small amount of pay?

YE: We thought I would just do the songs real quick and I did record them in one take!?! In and out so we thought it was great money for one hour of work. If I had received a lot of money in those days I might not be here today. I was a naughty girl.

AM: You were wild.

YE: Well I was an only child, a latch key kid, and when you are left-handed as well, watch out!

AM: I understand that. It's only logical that when you were hanging out with Eric Clapton and people like that. There is no way you would not be 'living the life.'

YE: Yes, you had to be one of the boys. It all went hand in hand. I couldn't be a rock 'n roller and not have a drink in one hand and a coke spoon in the other.

AM: Do you feel more like a Rocker or a Pop star?

YE: I've always been tagged 'Pop' but the 'Rock 'n Roll' heart was always there. When I went to London it was to be the first kick-ass, female electric guitar player. That's what I wanted to be.

AM: What happened?

YE: I got discovered! (more laughing) I used to go all around all the double-decker buses with just a fret board made of paper and practice the scales so I would know where the notes are. I heard Jimmy Hendrix did that with his fret board in his desk at school. I really wanted to play. I was learning Jimmy Page licks and getting it all together and of course that's when 'Superstar' came along, and it was a total different direction.

AM: Aren't you glad you did it?

YE: 'Jesus Christ Superstar' ended up being totally brilliant, especially for Christianity. It brought a lot of young kids into the Church. I thought Mary Magdalene was Mary's Mom. That's the level of my education at the time. It did teach a lot of people that at least Jesus was a man. It was a good thing.

AM: Many young people learned about the Bible from that show.

YE: Is that right? I went to hospitals and actually had to touch this girl who had been in an accident and she wanted me there. The parents were praying for her to make it through...and she did. They gave me the credit. It was getting too heavy. I did that twice and I thought, no I can't do this anymore. I became an Agnostic actually. I was getting so much flack from people who were Buddhists and Krishna's. The 'God' thing was getting on my nerves.

AM: It's called art.

YE: It's called will the real God please stand up. I was so confused.

AM: From 'Jesus Christ Superstar' to disco is a long way.

YE: Don't forget there was Clapton in between. He was my idol and he asked me to be in his band. Talk about a freaking moment when you cannot speak! I had just been on an album of his and he featured me in two songs. I was riding an incredible wave. I'm on the road with Clapton for three and a half years and Robert Stigwood said to me, 'You have to leave the band and get a band of your own. You have two singles and they are climbing the charts. You have to go out and tour.'

AM: How did Clapton react to this?

YE: I had to tell him I was leaving and he got very mad. I did not want to leave. I'd be there today if I could. I'd be very happy if I was still doing that today. I love the man's music, but he got mad and I got to do my own thing which was totally different from his. There were no more Lear jets and trains waiting to take us to our five star hotels. I was on a bus and we shared rooms in hotels and played little bars when it was a freezing cold winter. It was very hard. I paid my dues. But then 'Saturday Night Fever' came along.

AM: I remember a photo of you in Billboard magazine when you had your number one hit. You were with a group of executives and you were all holding up champagne flutes, celebrating.

YE: Oh really!?! That was a 'trippy' day. I got a call early in the morning, 'You are number one with a bullet.'

AM: Was it a dream come true?

YE: Yes I had been waiting and waiting. I was watching that thing climb the charts and then get stuck. There was some heavy competition. So it was a relief when it made it to number one. I don't know if there was any payola going on and I didn't want to know if there was. Then I got the 'Hawaii 5-O' part because I had a number one hit. I was Yvonne Kanekoa! (laughing)

AM: I remember that. I may have even seen some of it on YouTube. Now why did you move back to Hawaii?

YE: I mainly just had to get out of LA. I was living on top of Decker Canyon in a decrepit house and we were being evicted. Time to go. I took that opportunity. It was like God answering a prayer. I also decided to stop singing songs that I wasn't crazy about. I want to just do songs that I love. I don't want to waste my time doing that and then what if something I do hits? If I don't like it I am stuck. That's how I got stuck in disco for so long.

AM: Do you appreciate disco more now?

YE: I can see now what the power of it is. It is very positive and that's great to have in this day and age when everything is so negative. Back then I was not as into it because I was a Rock 'n Roller' so I was ready to leave the disco thing behind.

AM: What have you been doing musically the past few years?

YE: I started to write music. I liked what I was doing. I was kind of scolding people.

AM: What do you mean?

YE: My songs are about being more aware. I don't know why. I have things to say I suppose, right? I did write a great love song for my boyfriend called, 'Just Right.' I'm really hot on that stuff. I have an album's worth of material ready to go. I don't know why I can't just make that my priority and work on that. People want to record me over there for free. Come on let's just do it. I'm just not organized.

AM: So you do have some music that you have already recorded?

YE: I have demos of some songs that I am really excited about. It's just me and a guitar playing in the studio. I am also in the process of writing a song called 'Elephant' because I love the elephant. I was called 'Yvonne Elephant' in school which was really terrible. It was a real drag.

AM: Do you think we will hear some of this new music in 2010?

YE: Thank you so much. I need a little encouragement because I am the perfectionist. The mood has to be right, the inspiration has to be right, I have to be in the right place. That's not good. Sometimes you have to push yourself and force yourself because you can get surprises. I've got to finish the 'Elephant' song and 'Leave Lefty Alone' and then I'll be ready to record. There's nothing holding me back except myself.

AM: Why don't you get into acting?

YE: I don't know about acting.

AM: You are a great actress.

YE: I did the Hawaii 5-O part and of course I was in 'Superstar' but there was no talking, so when I did have to talk for the first time I thought it was really uncomfortable. I don't think I am going to pursue any acting. I have a hard enough time getting the music out.

EV: Your voice has remained strong and clear.

YE: They say it is the tone of my voice. For years I didn't know what people liked about my voice. I don't have a huge range. I don't have the gymnastics that Whitney does.

AM: Whatever is in your voice I know it is a warmth that I like.

YE: Oh really. Thank you.

EV: What was it like working with (photographer) Norman Seef?

YE: Oh he was fast. He was about trying something different. He said, 'Let's take it outside.' He got me running down a hill where one boob is up.

AM: Do you feel like Hawaii inspires you as an artist and are you there for the rest of your life?

YE: Oh yes. I have been given such warmth and such a welcome. It's like being a big fish in a small pond. They fed me when I was at my most insecure point. I needed to rebuild the confidence and that was the best place for me to be. I feel comfortable to be in my own skin there. I know what they are saying when they talk Pidgen. My Mom and Dad are there. They are going through the old age stuff so it's a good time for me to be there for them.
