Chris Bennett Interview

Grammy nominated singer and composer Chris Bennett speaks about Giorgio Moroder, Anita O'Day and her latest album, Sail Away - The Tahiti Sessions.

Chris Bennett is a Grammy nominated jazz artist with flawless vocals and classic disco chic that never seems to quit.

Chris Bennett’s Accomplishments Are Countless.

Where do you begin to discuss the brilliant career of a professional like Chris Bennett? She’s an artist with countless achievements, some of which include singing back up vocals on Donna Summer’s mega disco hit “Heaven Knows,” and releasing a number of albums, including a new solo effort, Sail Away – The Tahiti Sessions.
This doesn’t even encompass the time Chris spent with the band Munich Machine and record producer, songwriter and performer Giorgio Moroder.

Suite101 arranged a telephone interview with Chris Bennett as she strolled along the beach in Venice, California.Thank you to It’s Always The Right Time Media Relations for this opportunity.

Chris Bennett Interview - Giorgio Moroder, Munich Machine, and Disco Divas Unite.

Suite101: Early in your career you worked with the celebrated Oscar winner Giorgio Moroder. How did you initially meet him?
Chris Bennett: In the beginning of my career, I started out singing with Jim Nabors in Las Vegas, in a nightclub type of act. Sometime after that I went over to Germany to do some singing, and it was in Munich where I met Giorgio Moroder, in the management office of a record company there. He liked my voice and eventually he had me work on a number of Donna Summer’s songs; “Heaven Knows” was one of them. Giorgio was terrific.
Suite101: Tell us about your work with Giorgio Moroder’s band Music Machine.
C B: In the days when disco was really big, in the seventies, Giorgio Moroder produced the band Munich Machine, which was also a personal project of his. I recorded a dance version of the Procol Harum song Whiter Shade of Pale for the album, Munich Machine Introducing Chris Bennett – A Whiter Shade of Pale. I was also featured on the only duet album Giorgio ever made, Love’s In You, Love’s In Me, which we made as Giorgio and Chris.
Suite101: I read the Munich Machine Introducing Chris Bennett album was initially released in 1978, and it’s now been re-released.
C B: Yes it has, and it’s very exciting.
Suite101: Is it available online?
C B: Yes, and I have the link on my website.
Suite101: I understand you met jazz singer Anita O’Day?
C B: About twenty five years before she died is about the time I first met Anita. One day my manager asked if I would like to meet her. Of course I grew up with jazz, so I immediately said sure. When we met I remember Anita was wearing those false eyelashes that she had, and she didn’t really go out of her way to get overly friendly with me. She was still working out every week with her accompanist at that time. You know that she’s still inspiring.
Suite101: Sail Away – The Tahiti Sessions is your other current release. Perfidia and Guess I’ll Hang My Tears Out To Dry are two songs that I admire from the album; is there any special story behind these recordings?
C B: Thank you. Yes, there is a concept behind the music. The album is an intimate story about a woman’s personal journey. The idea for the album came when I was in Tahiti . The last day of my initial trip there, when I was house sitting, I discovered a recording studio that was fantastic. I called Eric Doney, who plays piano on the album. I loved recording in Tahiti because the weather there is moist which is great for my vocal chords.
Suite101: What is the Everybody’s Got a Right – Disco Divas Unite Tour?
C B: I’ve written a new song, Everybody Has a Right, about gay marriage, and I’ve teamed up with Pattie Brooks, a popular disco singing great who used to be on the same record label as me, to debut the song the first week of November, at the Gay Pride Parade in Palm Springs. We’re thinking about a supporting concert tour and a television special.
Suite101: You've worked on many hit songs and worked with so many influential artists. Is there anything you haven’t done yet, but would still like to do?
C B: A couple of things come to mind. I’d like to go to the next level, like Anita O’Day, and I’d like to write a Broadway musical. There was a time when I wanted to be Mary Martin, you know.

Chris Bennett’s flawless vocal delivery lends itself to a sound that’s somewhat of a cross between Hildegard Knef and the West Coast Cool School of Jazz, with a bit of classic disco chic thrown in for good measure. No matter how you look at it though, Bennett has always been and still remains a civic minded beauty with an extremely fine voice and a shining heart of gold.

The Night People - Again

Recordlabel Ramshorn had quite some influence in the early 80s, providing the Dutch market with high class disco productions. This song, by One-Hit-Wonders called The Night People. is a fine example. Romantic uptempo duet.

PATTIE BROOKS - AFTER DARK [1978]

Chris Bennett

http://www.cdbaby.com/Artist/ChrisBennett

Chris Bennett is, today, a name synonymous with the international success and commercial appeal of the contemporary jazz music scene. With the release of SAIL AWAY: The TAHITI SESSIONS, her 11th studio CD release, she has secured a revered place as one of an intimate handful of successors to Peggy Lee, June Christy, Anita O'Day and the classic American female jazz vocalists.
At times a stylist and, more often, the singer of self-composed music and lyrics, she is always a genuine artist in performance A lifetime of entertaining combined with a disciplined regimen of daily practice and consistent training is evident in masterful live performances and perfect studio recordings.
Like songbirds Helen Morgan, June Christy and Anita O'Day, Bennett is originally from Illinois, where she grew up on a musical diet of Big Band melodies and Broadway show tunes. A love of performing lead to a passion for dance and, while in high school, she opened a dance studio at the age of 16.  Bennett danced her way through college majoring in dance education and performance and, soon after, pirouetted to graduate school in California where she developed her greatest movements; of the lips and the vocal chords.
With a dancer's skills and a vocalist's talent, Bennett was selected by Jim Nabors to join his Las Vegas revue which eventually toured cross-country. Performing on stage every night in new venues, playing to fresh audiences in different cities, Bennett gained the confidence and experience of a seasoned professional. Soon, she would go on tour to headline her own shows across the globe. From choreographing her dancers to selecting the repertoire of her band, Bennett incorporated contemporary pop covers and jazz standards in her shows. She also cultivated a new passion: songwriting.
By her mid-twenties, Bennett was already a well traveled woman and, certainly, a vocalist of the world. While on tour in Germany, she was scouted and hand- picked by multi-Grammy and multi-Academy Award winning composer/producer Giorgio Moroder to join the popular disco group Munich Machine.  He chose Bennett to be the lead vocalist for their sophomore album which would contain a dance version of the Procol Harum rock classic "A Whiter Shade of Pale."” Bennett not only recorded the entire album, she also posed for the groundbreaking cover art; entirely naked. Bennett's runway model's body and movie star looks caused an international sensation and made for one of the highest charting and highest grossing disco albums of 1978.
A full fledged dance music diva under the guidance of Moroder, Bennett was signed to Casablanca Records as a songwriter and recording artist. She recorded as one half of ‘Giorgio & Chris’ for the only duet album of Moroder’s entire career, “Love’s In You, Love’s In Me.” Her distinctly clear voice and high range also backed up some of Donna Summer’s biggest hits, most notably the number one pop hit and Grammy-nominated single “MacArthur Park,” the certified Gold single “Heaven Knows” and the number one certified Platinum “Live & More” album. Bennett again made international headlines when the song she co-wrote and sang the theme from “Midnight Express” was nominated for a Grammy.
By the 1980s, Chris Bennett had established herself as a successful singer, songwriter and producer, occasionally singing back-up for Rita Coolidge and Johnny Mathis. Her songs were being recorded by the likes of Tina Turner and The Manhattan Transfer. She co-wrote and co-produced for The Three Degrees, the final Munich Machine album “Body Shine” and the Suzi Lane album “Ooh La La.” She also played a key role in producing for and writing with up-and-coming Grammy-award winning Blues artist Keb Mo.
In the 1990s, Bennett reflected on her career as an accomplished singer, noteworthy producer and popular songwriter. Having performed for others behind the scenes primarily throughout the 1980s, she made a promise to return to the recording studio and the concert stage, this time, for herself. It would also be a return to her first musical love: jazz.
A self titled CD release in 1993 marked the welcomed return of Chris Bennett as lead vocalist. Utilizing the talents of celebrity musicians and introducing new artists, Bennett specialized in creating a musical experience of self composed pieces, some jazz classics and a contemporary cover or two. The success of her debut jazz CD led to a series of future releases that capitalized on this combination. Jazz magazines critically praised her, noting “after a successful career as a background performer, it is a pleasure to welcome Chris Bennett to center stage.”
Since then, Bennett has been a staple of Jazz radio programmers everywhere. The success of her concerts, CD sales and consistent critical triumphs have led to sold-out performances throughout Europe, New York supper clubs and Chicago cabarets. At home in Los Angeles, she continues to be a popular artist and regular club favorite.
Chris Bennett has 11 CDs available which include a Christmas Jazz CD, a Latin Jazz CD, and an import-only live CD released in 2004. A humanitarian of the first order, she has also co-written and recorded a song in memory of the Holocaust survivors (“Remember”), as well as a song in support of gay marriage (“Everybody Has The Right”). An outspoken artist for social change and an advocate of community activism, locally and globally, Chris is often called upon to perform in benefit of organizations such as SHARE, The Torch Foundation and many others.
From disco diva to jazz chanteuse, the musical journey of Chris Bennett has been the evolution of an artist come full circle. An accomplished vocalist, songwriter, composer and producer, she recently added Broadway musical composer to her repertoire.
Her latest CD is a return to her roots as a singer-songwriter.  Combining self-composed ballads and unusual jazz standards, SAIL AWAY: THE TAHITI SESSIONS is her most powerful album to date…and her most personal.

Patti Brooks

Pattie Brooks is an American singer most frequently associated with the disco era. She was born in Fort Riley, Kansas to a military family. Her first break came in 1968 when she auditioned for the chorus on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour". In the next decade she became a sought-after backing singer, appearing on the Bobby Darin Show and touring with, among others Helen Reddy. She sang backing on Donna Summer's "I Remember Yesterday" album.

Casablanca Records Career

In the mid-1970s Brooks came to the attention of disco producer Simon Soussain and her solo recording career was born. Her first of four albums on the Casablanca label was 1977's Love Shook (the album was credited as Pattie Brooks & The Simon Orchestra), and the whole album peaked at #2 on the US Dance Chart. Pattie remained with Soussain and in 1978 recorded her biggest club hit, "After Dark". This was selected to be part of the soundtrack to the film Thank God It's Friday and as the soundtrack topped the club play charts, Pattie's contribution was up there with friend and stablemate Donna Summer's "Last Dance" as the most celebrated tracks. "After Dark" was the mainstay of Pattie's second album (now with sole billing) Our Ms Brooks. In 1979 Pattie moved away from Soussain as her third album Party Girl was produced by Bunny Sigler of Instant Funk and Salsoul fame. The result was a far more varied album that encompassed funk, pop and a big ballad as well as pure disco. While the album spawned no huge singles it did include "Got Tu Go Disco", the title song from a notorious Broadway flop musical. In 1979 Pattie branched out from disco by singing "Close Enough For Love", the title song to the Vanessa Redgrave movie Agatha. By 1980 the disco backlash had taken effect in the USA, and Pattie's fourth and last Casablanca offering Pattie Brooks was very much a pop-soul affair, produced this time by Michael Smith. No hits were forthcoming and Pattie left Casablanca.

Post Disco Activity

She returned in 1982 on the Mirage label with a fifth album In My World, produced by Sandy Linzer. The album reflected the popular styles of the time, and produced a moderate club hit in the dance-rock tinged "Doctor Ruth" and a minor R&B hit in the ballad "Every Time I Turn Around". This turned out to be Pattie's last album, although she remained active in terms of one-off singles. In 1983 she was signed by Backstreet Records, releasing the minor club hit "Get It On And Have A Party" and featured prominently on the soundtrack to the film Doctor Detroit, including two duets with its star Dan Aykroyd. In the mid 1980s Pattie released singles on the Easy Street label, including a contribution to the 1985 Emilio Estevez movie That Was Then, This Is Now. In 1988 she surfaced on another label, Waterwheel with the maxi-single "Function At The Junction". At this point Pattie returned to backup singing and advertising jingles.

Revival

In 2006 the Nu Improved label remixed Pattie's greatest hit "After Dark" and issued a CD single with up to the minute remixes, the single was well received and spent several weeks on the US club play chart.
Her daughter Yvette Marine is a member of the Mary Jane Girls.
